El Escorial


60 km from Madrid in the Sierra de Guadarrama is located the monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is a monument that must be visited, just to see the beautiful surroundings and a stunning architecture.
El Escorial was the seat of Philip II and was built in 1562 and ended in 1584.


The building was built according to plans by Juan Bautista de Toledo and Juan de Herrera. The palace with a famous library includes also a basilica, a royal tomb (Panteon de los Reyes) and a monastery.
Since 1861, El Escorial is no longer a royal residence.
